Emergent's Avatar project demonstrates how point clouds can be collected by a rover, transmitted over the Internet, and visualized in real time using commercial virtual reality (VR) headsets such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Furthermore, users can control the rover using natural voice commands, thereby closing the loop in remote data exploration. The Avatar software, which uses the OpenFrames VR visualization API and Amazon Alexa natural language processing engine, allows users to immerse themselves in the dataset, dynamically explore it in varying levels of detail, and control data collection in real time.
