Emergent Hosts Summer Interns
This summer Emergent Space Technologies had the privilege of hosting
two
student interns from the NASA Goddard SAWDRIP program. Emergent interns
Richard C. Page III and Matt Sheats, were assigned to work a 10-week
internship under the guidance of senior Emergent engineers.

Mr. Richard Page III
Richard was assigned to work with Dr. David Gaylor on the development
and independent verification of the "Java Astrodynamics Toolkit"
(JAT)
against AGI's Satellite Tool Kit (STK).
Richard's efforts were critical to the OD Toolbox project. While
working on this project, Richard spent the
majority of his time programming astrodynamic concepts and assisting in
the creation of a Java to Matlab interface. Richard was very diligent
in his work, often putting in extra hours on the project during his
spare time. He was able to tie in his undergraduate experiences from
his senior design class to his work at Emergent by helping to introduce
Emergent employees to Celestia,
an orbit visualization tool. He also
impressed customers with his thorough knowledge of astrodynamics and
orbit determination. Richard was very enthusiastic about his work at
Emergent this summer and has said that he hopes to be able to assist
with the future development of JAT while attending graduate school at The University of
Illinois.
Mr. Matt Sheats
Matt was assigned to work with Rob Antonucci on the creation of an
internal and external website for the Mission Systems Engineering
Branch, NASA’s Code 599. The purpose of the external website was to
allow people outside of the branch to understand the processes involved
with systems engineers. Matt interacted with the customer, Maria So,
head of code 599, weekly to update her as to the progress of the
website and to allow her to make necessary formatting and aesthetic
decisions to the external website. Matt represented Emergent Space
Technologies well through his dedication to the website development
projects. Something Matt encountered, “…was how I began to populate the
web pages. The biggest challenge was getting the information needed for
each page.” The purpose of the internal website was to create a tool (a
document repository), restricted to code 599 employees, which contained
important documents that were needed within the branch. Matt used tools
including MySQL, PHP, Apache, and Owl to assist him in the creation of
the internal website document repository. His development of the
document repository assisted in shortening the training time needed for
introducing future systems engineers to their work. Matt stated that,
“My overall internship was great. Rob was an excellent mentor. I
learned a lot from it and I hope Emergent Space Technologies learned
some new things as well. I would definitely do this again if I had the
option.” Matt recently completed a BS degree in IST (Information
Sciences and
Technology) from The Pennsylvania State
University.
